Wrightington Hospital

We were awarded a major works package on the new revolutionary £18m orthopaedic centre at Wrightington Hospital, alongside Wigan and Leigh NHS foundation trust.

The hospital is a recognised centre for orthopaedic excellence and the new development accommodates the new surgical facility, compromising  of an admissions & recovery unit, two 28-bed wards and a four-bay theatre complex; which has proved very successful at other hospitals up and down the country, with reported benefits of increased safety, improved clinical practice and greater efficiency.

The redeveloped hospital which has won the ‘Value and Improvement in Estate Management’ award, provides modern high quality surgical facilities which allow the Trust to continue to attract patients from all over the country for orthopaedic healthcare; it also means a vastly improved environment for both patients and staff, with more single room accommodation, increased safety, improved clinical practice and reduced length of stay.

It received several visits from the Department of Health including Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt and the design will now be used as a case study across the NHS for other similar developments.

Staff commented working in a modern environment allows them to work more efficiently and will energise them, therefore creating a fantastic experience for all patients. The repeatable rooms and standardised components initiative is part of the Department of Health’s cost reduction programme for capital schemes within the NHS.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said a first class, cost effective facility has been delivered within budget and on time, and the building is innovative in its design and will support the clinical teams in being able to deliver even higher standards of clinical care. Patients are also delighted and have said the new unit is world class and gives patients a 21st century experience.
