Bangor

We were delighted to be awarded the major works package on this £38 million St Mary’s Halls Student Accommodation development for Bangor University.

The design was to deliver high standard facilities to accommodate some of the 11,000 students that Bangor University has many from overseas that today’s students would expect to see on a modern residential campus with a real sense of community in an enhanced social and living environment on the site of a disused former teaching college.

Located on an elevated site overlooking the city the village-style campus provides 602 student residences, in a series of townhouses and cluster flat arrangements within five new build accommodation blocks arranged around a shared street and central square to help create a strong new student communitys.  A number of important buildings, formerly part of St Mary’s College, were renovated to provide an historic core to the new village, providing a range of shared amenities including a cafe bar, shop, laundry, and sport & fitness facilities.

The five new build blocks are rated BREEAM Excellent while the two refurbished blocks achieved a BREEAM rating of Very Good. Energy use for the project was 153 kWh per £100k of the project value, and water consumption was 5.62 m³ per £100k.

Great care was taken to preserve the ecology of the site and to facilitate bat roosts while nesting sites were disrupted.
